Black spots on diarvella/honeysuckle #743255

Asked April 08, 2021, 12:15 PM EDT

Hello, there were black spots and die off on some honeysuckle shrubs that I care for last year. There are a large amount of these shrubs planted together in the landscape. I plan to prune as to open them up for air circulation and remove some for better spacing. Should I also plan to treat them with a fungicide this year, or do you think the pruning will be enough? Please see image. Thank you!

Expert Response

Your shrubs could well have both powdery mildew and leaf spot, which are common on honeysuckles. Your plan to prune them thoroughly and thin some out is a good one. This will allow air and light to penetrate and help prevent these problems. Water at the base only and don’t fertilize the plants. Fungicides aren’t usually necessary unless your bushes have lost their leaves several years in a row. You could do the pruning and see how well your honeysuckles perform. If the problems continue to occur, you could apply preventive fungicides next year. For more information on treating leaf spot, see
